  1. We welcomed Shawn's niece, Jenna, and her family to Winter Garden last week for part of their family vacation. It was so much fun getting to spend time with Jenna, Hassan and their three beautiful kiddos.

Shawn and I recently took Sam and Teddy for a picnic in Newton Park near downtown Winter Garden and had a great time. It's the perfect outing with a baby! So we decided that it would be fun to take our visitors on a picnic to the park as well, and we are naming this new regular event "Sammies with Sammy"!  Everyone enjoyed the fresh air and the gorgeous lake shore view. The boys tossed the baseball around, climbed some trees and saw a baby alligator floating by the dock.  Everyone had a yummy lunch (Publix subs for the adults and PB&J for the kids) and Shawn taught the kids how to make a duck bill with Pringles.  Amazing how being a parent takes you right back to your own childhood!

Our excursion also included a stop at Scoops ice cream shop. We love this charming, old-fashioned ice cream parlor. It's the perfect staple for our little town and no visit to Winter Garden is complete without a Scoops ice cream cone. We also stopped off at the new downtown splash pad. We've been waiting for Sam to be old enough for a visit and we thought he was finally ready! It was so cool to introduce him to water as a toy!

There are so many fun photos to share. Want to see more? Here are all the photos from our July adventures.

  2. Every week, we receive emails from Baby Center, WedMD and the like with great information about baby development at Sam's age. When the messages started mentioning sitting up, I thought, "No way! He's not ready! He's just a baby!", but thought we should start practicing anyway.

The other night after work, Shawn and I were playing on the floor with him and we decided to show him the colorful accessories that go along with this house toy. We sat him up in front of the door and let go to see if he could sit up independently. And he did!! Of course he was a little wobbly, but after a couple of days he seems to have gotten the hang of it. We think he's really enjoying his new point of view and is very curious about his surroundings.

Sitting up independently for the first time
He's also started to use rolling around as a mode of transportation. He loves rolling over several times in one direction, until he runs into a piece of furniture. It's a blast watching him figure all of this out and start to explore his world.

  3. Happy Little Plaid Family
We had a great Independence Day here at home, with our very own little "Uncle Sam".  My mom, stepdad and our friend Scott came over to celebrate with us. Shawn cooked up some yummy BBQ and even set off fireworks in the backyard.

Our neighbors were also in their back yard setting off their own fireworks so we took turns and all enjoyed the "rocket's red glare" together! Sam was fascinated with the fireworks. The noise didn't seem to scare him at all. He watched intently and just took it all in. And much to our surprise, he slept through the "bombs bursting in air" throughout the neighborhood after he went to bed.

It was a great All-American day! We are having so much fun sharing each holiday with Sam and showing him all of the fun traditions of our families and culture.

  4. Silly Baby Tricks

    Wednesday, July 4, 2012

Our little boy is growing up and doing all kinds of new tricks! He's discovered his feet and learned how to hold his bottle all by himself. Since Sam started eating solids, we decided to make our own baby food with the Baby Bullet. Sam's been offered homemade sweet potatoes, peas, pears and bananas. He loves the fruit and doesn't really like rice cereal or the vegetables. But we're going to keep working on him. Neither Shawn or I can blame him on the rice cereal - bleck!

Holding his bottle like a big boy! He's watching TV at the same time... multi-tasking

We had a really nice first Father's Day. We started the day with a homemade breakfast casserole and we all enjoyed a meal at the table together. Shawn had been pretty attached to the hospital bracelet he wore when Sam was born and was sad when it finally broke apart and fell off. So for Father's Day we got him a sterling silver ID bracelet with Sam's full name and his birth information engraved on it. I also got him a picture frame with with an American flag design and the words "Future President" and put a photo of Sam in it! Shawn really liked his special gifts and I think he had a nice day with his family.  Shawn is also looking forward to many a Father's Day to come when Sam is a little older and can sit with us to watch baseball and eat popcorn and apple slices, in honor of his sweet Grandpa Kramer who will certainly always be watching over Sam from Heaven.

We've had a couple of doctor visits this week. This past Monday, on his five month birthday mark, Sam came down with a fever and wasn't eating well. He'd been suffering from congestion for the past couple of weeks - remnants of his first cold - so we suspected an ear infection. We decided to take him to the late-night pediatrician, but the doctor really couldn't tell us what was wrong with him. By Wednesday morning, his lack of appetite was still really concerning, so we took him to his regular pediatrician and learned that Sam had viral throat infection that included three ulcers. Dr. Gordon said that Sam was one tough kid because he expected him to be more uncomfortable and upset. But Sam was his usual happy self - smiling, trying to grab the stethoscope and playing with Dr. Gordon's fingers. Unfortunately, since it was viral, all he could recommend was plenty of rest, a cold drink and acetaminophen (Tylenol). Sam wasn't really interested in cold water and we didn't want to offer him juice yet, but he loved cold bananas and pears! It's Saturday now and Sam is in much better spirits! His appetite has finally started to return and he actually slept last night waking only two times, which was a nice change from waking every 45 minutes or so all of the other nights this week. If you're curious, Sam weighed in at 16 lbs 11 oz... right on track!

He loves to stand and play with the toys in his Jump and Play Frog
Although we can't really blame daycare for all of this illness, we suspect it's a contributor. So we've decided to take a break from daycare and hire a babysitter to stay at home with Sam three days a week. Luckily, Grandma Ewen still watches him the other two days. We hope that he builds a very strong immune system...we're just going to let him start doing it a little later in life.

Check out more photos of Sam in our June album.

  5. First Day of School

    Saturday, June 9, 2012

Things have gotten pretty busy around here since Shawn and I are both back to work full time. With that comes business trips for Shawn and daycare for Sam.

Daycare has been quite the adventure so far. When he's not with Grandma Ewen two days a week, Sam spends three days each week at the YMCA Family Center at the Walt Disney World Resort. Pretty cool, eh?? Sounds like Mickey Mouse swings through once a while for a meet n' greet. That's not really the case, but it is fun to have Sam right there on the Disney property, just minutes away from our offices. The women who care for Sam are super nice and they have all taken an instant liking to him. They say that Sam is one of the quieter babies in his room - appropriately named the "Cuddlers" room - and that he is very sweet. He is also quite the flirt with his caregivers, as we've witnessed. Maybe that's his strategy to make sure he's first in line for a bottle!

    Who could resist this charm?
Shawn and I have been so impressed with how well Sam has adjusted to being in a bright, noisy environment all day at daycare. We were worried that napping might be a challenge, since there's so much stimuli.  But he generally takes three 45-minute naps each day, thank goodness! And he comes home completely wiped out from the activity of the day. Most days, after dinner and his bedtime routine, we are just getting Sam into the crib as he completely passes out! That part has been a difficult adjustment for Shawn and I. Since it's sometimes a mad dash to get him home, fed and settled for the night, we really don't get to spend a lot of time with him in the evenings...so we really miss him. We often say to each other, "I miss Sam," after he's gone to bed for the night!

Sleeping so peacefully in a baby burrito
A few days after starting daycare (and no surprise to us), for the first time since he was born, Sam woke up with a fever. Of course we were quite worried about him, but he handled it like a champ! He didn't cry or fuss too much, even as his fever climbed close to 103 degrees. It took about a day and a half for the fever to subside and then Sam was back on his feet, so to speak. Soon after, he developed a raspy voice which the pediatrician says is just a little upper respiratory irritation, probably the low point of all of this. It doesn't seem to bother Sam at all, but he sounds just terrible when he cries or tries to babble.

This is just the beginning of building Sam's immunity and we know it won't always be this easy for him to power through illness.  But we're so relieved that his first bout wasn't a total whopper.  We can say that this time, as new parents, Sam being sick was definitely more troublesome for us than for him.

In other exciting news, Sam started eating solid foods this week. So far, we have only offered him rice cereal with apples, and he seems to be okay with it. At first, he looked pretty disgusted when we put the cereal in his mouth, but eventually he figured out that he might want a little more of that stuff! He's still not super excited about it - it is rice cereal, after all - but he's getting the hang of eating from a spoon and figuring out what to do with the mush on his tongue. Sometimes he even wants to feed himself, but we have to be careful not to let him gag himself with the spoon!  We're excited to introduce Sam to more yummy tasting foods very soon. Bananas are next on the list. If he's anything like his daddy, he's really going to enjoy that! Does the Baby Bullet make banana pudding?

    "What is this???"
    "I can do it!"

  6. Just before Memorial Day weekend, Sam had his four month pediatric well-visit. He weighed in at 15 pounds (50th percentile) and measured 25 inches tall (50th percentile).  We were pretty nervous for him when it came to this round of shots, since his first round really caught him off-guard.  But he barely cried after receiving four new pokes in the thighs! What a brave and tough little guy!

We headed over to Palm Harbor to spend the holiday weekend with Kathy, Melissa, Shell and Aunt Deb, who was visiting from Oklahoma. Deb and Sam met for the first time and I think they hit it off!

Sam meet Aunt Deb. Aunt Deb meet Sam.
    A smile for Aunt Deb
The pool water at Aunt Kathy's house was still a little chilly, but we didn't want Sam to be left out of all the fun. So we set him on the side of the pool and let him dip his tiny toes in the water. He hasn't yet been for a real swim, but we can't wait to get him in the water when the time is right. We're thinking we'll enroll him in infant swim lessons later this summer. Sam's cousin Lleyton, now 8 months old, was like a little fish in the water, so hopefully Sam was watching and taking notes!

    "Hey, this is kinda refreshing!"

  7. We're Celebrating

    Sunday, May 13, 2012

    Celebrating his birthday

It's already been a month full of celebration. It started with Shawn turning the big 4-0 at the beginning of the month. To start the festivities, Shawn and I went to this amazing farm-to-table dinner as part of the Winter Garden Harvest Festival. We sampled amazing food - all locally sourced and prepared by local chefs - cocktails from a local distillery and beer from a local brewery. Slow food, they called it. Amazing concept! The event was held in our new downtown pavilion with beautifully decorated tables dressed with crisp white linens and fresh flowers. In addition to enjoying the food, Shawn and I took to the "dance floor" and swayed to music being performed by a couple of local acts. It was an amazing night...we want to go back next year and invite you all to come with us!

The following day, we continued celebrating with family breakfast and the opening of gifts. Sam got daddy the Indianapolis flag t-shirt he's wearing in the photo above... he's so thoughtful! Later that afternoon, Gene and Jen came to celebrate with us. They made us a delicious meatloaf dinner and brought red velvet cupcakes! Yum-o!

We also celebrated my first Mother's Day! The boys were so good to me... they made me breakfast, picked out the loveliest bouquet of flowers and other special treats that they knew I would enjoy! Even Teddy pitched in to get me a massage gift card, saying that he was sorry that he "stresses me out." If you haven't been to our house lately, then you haven't had the pleasure of witnessing me yell at him every time Sam cries and he attacks various spots in the carpet. He's started to put holes in the rug, which displeases me to no end. But I digress....

We are also so proud of our boy who has successfully learned how to soothe himself to sleep at night. It took a couple nights of crying it out - no more than 30 mins - but he learned and now sleeps very well in his crib. We can't say that he's sleeping all night now, but he sleeps well beyond the six hours that is expected of him at his age. He goes to sleep between 7 and 7:30 p.m. each night. We usually hear from him again around 3 or 4 a.m. and then not again until between 6 and 7 a.m. We aren't feeding him at night now so we really hope that he figures out that it's not worth it to get up in the night anymore. As his brain matures, we should start to see that night waking disappear... frankly, daddy and mommy can't wait. We're happy with his progress so far and are so excited to see him each morning when he wakes smiling and cooing at us.

    Speaking of smiles...
When he's awake for the day, he's hitting all kinds of milestones. He can roll from his back to belly and belly to back. It takes a while for him to work his way around, but he can do it. He can hold toys and get them into his mouth now. We think it's pretty ironic that he will pull his pacifier out of his mouth with one hand and suck his fingers on the other hand... silly kid! He also has such great head control now that he can also sit up in the Bumbo. This is going to come in handy for haircuts, as we learned today when he got his second one.
